Frequently Asked Questions

01

What is Tiny Messy Hands?

Tiny Messy Hands is a sensory-rich, inclusive messy playgroup based in Orpington for babies and toddlers aged 0–5. We offer parent-attended sessions that focus on open-ended, play-based learning to support early development in a fun, engaging, and low-pressure environment.

Our carefully designed sensory stations including slime, water, foam, dry bins, and outdoor gross motor activities are created to support a wide range of developmental needs, including sensory processing, fine and gross motor skills, emotional regulation, and early social communication.

We proudly welcome all children, including those with additional needs or neurodivergent traits, and provide a nurturing space where they can explore at their own pace. Inspired by my own child’s transformation through sensory play, Tiny Messy Hands is built on the belief that every child deserves the chance to grow through joyful, hands-on experiences and best of all, the mess stays with us!

02

What age group is Tiny Messy Hands for?

Our sessions are specially designed for children aged 0–5 years. Activities are tailored to support early childhood development from babies who are just starting to explore, to pre-schoolers ready to pour, scoop, climb, and create.

03

Do I need to stay with my child?

Yes - Tiny Messy Hands is a parent-attended playgroup. We encourage grown-ups to stay, support, and get stuck into the fun if they like. It’s a great bonding experience, and you’ll love watching your child explore and learn in a safe, relaxed setting.

04

I’m not from Orpington - can I still come?

06

Is there a buggy-friendly space?

Yes, there’s plenty of buggy parking available on site. We want your arrival to be smooth and stress-free, especially if you’ve got more than one little one.

07

Is there a safe area for non-crawlers or young babies?

Absolutely. We always set up a dedicated baby-friendly space that’s separate from the older children’s activities. This area is soft, calm, and safe ideal for babies who are still exploring from the floor or beginning to sit up.

08

What if my child doesn’t like mess?

That’s totally okay! Every child engages at their own pace. There’s no pressure to dive into the messiest tray. Many little ones start slowly and build confidence over time. We offer a variety of stations with a perfect balance,  from dry sensory bins to water play or physical fun in our outdoor space so your child can explore in a way that feels right for them.

09

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes - spaces are limited to keep things safe and enjoyable for everyone. Booking in advance helps us prepare the right amount of materials and maintain a calm, spacious environment.

10

Are there refreshments available?

Yes! We offer free tea and coffee for grown-ups, and have light refreshments for sale during the session. You’re welcome to bring your own water or snacks for your child, too.

11

Can we bring a picnic?

If the weather’s nice and we’re using our lovely outdoor grass area, then yes you're welcome to bring a small picnic. We just ask that families help keep the space clean by popping any food packaging or rubbish in the bins provided. It’s all about sharing the space respectfully.

12

Do you accommodate allergies or dietary requirements?

Yes! We take allergies and food sensitivities seriously.
Our play stations
are nut-free, and we do not use common allergens like
conkers (horse chestnuts), peanuts, or tree nuts in any of our sensory materials. We’re also mindful about using gluten, dairy, and other potential irritants, and these will always be clearly labelled if included.
That said, Tiny Messy Hands is a shared space, and
we can’t guarantee a completely allergen-free environment. If your child has a severe allergy, please speak to us ahead of your session so we can support you as best we can.
Please also help us maintain a safe space by avoiding nut-based snacks and informing us of any allergies when booking.

If we’re outside, please dress for the weather wellies and sunhats as needed!

What if my child is unwell before a session?

We kindly ask that you do not attend if your child is unwell, recovering from illness, or showing any signs of contagious conditions (such as colds, flu, chickenpox, or stomach bugs).

This helps protect our youngest attendees especially babies  and ensures everyone can enjoy a safe, healthy environment.

If your child becomes unwell after booking and you cancel at least 24 hours before your session, you may be eligible for a refund.
